2002-10-29 - 7:14 p.m. Here's one short scene from My Weekend with Grandma: Scene opens with Baby Lou in high chair. Grandma sits as close as possible in dining room chair. I prepare Baby's lunch. I bring out the first course--cheerios and tofu chunks. Grandma: Mmm. We like cheese. Me: Actually it's tofu. Grandma: Uh oh. She's sucking it and spitting it out. She doesn't like it. Bleh. Icky. She doesn't like it. Me: She likes tofu. Grandma: We like cheese. Fade to Black Sonny and I are meat eaters, but we don't eat a whole lot of meat. And, we probably won't give Lou any significant amount of meat until she's about two. She has had an occasional bite of meat when we are eating it...a bit of turkey dog here, a bite of lasagna there, but in general, she doesn't eat meat. This causes my mother big anxiety. She is obsessed with protein. How will the baby ever get enough protein? We try to reassure her by discussing non-meat protein sources. She'll have no part of it. She came to me with details from a "news report" that she heard "somewhere" linking soy with early puberty. Now, she's panicked. She does not find it amusing when Sonny and I talk about all the buxom young girls in Asia. I'm sure she did read an article somewhere that discussed the POSSIBILITY of a link, but I have to say I'm much more concerned with growth hormones in milk and beef than with soy products. We will never see eye-to-eye on this. She thinks we're "health nuts" because we eat yogurt. Yes, she does. |
